Knee High By The Forth of July

1–2 minutes

Knee-high by the Fourth of July” is an old adage used by corn farmers near and far to measure the success of their crops come Independence Day

The farming community brings us lots of customs and mores including this one. I believe it also gave us things such as daylight savings time and turning the clock back. We used to be a nation of farmers. Now we out source that to the back door gardeners.

Our corn is not only knee-high it is high knee-high as it is approaching 9 to 10 feet tall and we still have a few days to the Fourth of July. And that’s while Everything else is going to Helena in a handbasket. I’m not correcting that miss type as it’s kind of cool. But you know what I mean. Not that I knew what I mean because I have no idea going to hell in a handbasket what it actually means.

These little bright spots in our daily lives are what keep us going. In the end we wind up with a half bushel of corn, half bushel potatoes and we will call our self farmers. We reap what we sow.

Be 115° temperatures are fading into the rearview mirror. They are gone but not forgotten. For now, we shall enjoy the calm before the lack of a storm. We were going to a period Where we hope for rain. You notice I didn’t say pray for rain.
