Joan Benoit Samuelson (born May 16, 1957) is an Americanmarathonrunner who was the first women’s Olympic Gamesmarathon champion, winning the gold medal at the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles

She captured my heart during the 84 Olympic trials as she had knee surgery a few weeks before the event. The event itself was amazing at it was the first time woman ran that distance.

I had the pleasure of running with her at The Bar Harbour half marathon where we both ran with baby joggers. She is an amazing athlete and human being.
