Statistics Are Like Bikinis

1–2 minutes

What are your thoughts on the concept of living a very long life?

Of course, our first instinct is, I wanna live forever. The first thing we have to do is take the word “I” out of that sentence. Our second knee-jerk reaction is sure I want to live forever if I’m healthy and functional.

This is a back of the envelope calculation, let’s say for example we all live to be 50. We get to be 50 and we die. Statistically we would have 35% less people on this over heated planet. That would be a rather good thing for this planet.

We as a society or population don’t usually make decisions based on what’s best for the population and planet. We are a “ME Me ME” society.

I’m not much of a religious person and I’m terrified of dying. But I know it’s inevitable. Despite my bad genetics, I take many steps to make my life as long as possible.

I’m OK with that.

Getting old is not easy, and I can’t imagine doing it for another 50 years on an even more crowded planet.

Just let my dog live forever.
