Go Forth and Pollinate

1–2 minutes

What Really Matters?

Scientists estimate that one out of every three bites of food we eat—everything from almonds and blueberries to tomatoes and cocoa—exists because of pollinators like bees, birds, and bats.

Pollinator populations have significantly declined in recent decades, with about 40% of invertebrate and 16% of vertebrate pollinators at risk of extinction. Habitat loss due to agricultural expansion and urbanization, pesticide use, and climate change have been identified as the leading causes.

Nearly every patch of green space can help sustain pollinators with nectar and pollen to eat. Why not tend a patch yourself? You don’t need a large plot of land. If you don’t have a backyard, a balcony will do. Just add a pot of coneflowers or marigolds.

This subject is so deep and rather simple. Little things that can help.

  • Turn off your lights at night The light is a hindrance to bird migrations
  • No need to put pesticides on your lawn. Beat the Jones and get rid of your lawn.
  • By all means keep your cats inside.
  • Take a few minutes and listen to the birds sing. You will soon be invested.
