Steer Around Cliches

What is the greatest gift someone could give you?

Immediate Reaction

The most valuable thing people can give you is their time. Of course this is true, but for this purpose, and because we are a consumer driven society, I’ll concentrate on actual gift giving.

Which Makes this Answer

The answer is complex and it doesn’t matter all that much. I rarely buy things for myself and sometimes feel guilty for doing so. (Excluding Vinyl Records) So I was excited to receive a Cure album for Christmas.

I Don’t like to Shop

So getting something practical like a sweater or a cool shirt, it is nice to have someone shop for you. In a sense they are giving you their time.

Gift Giving

I must apologize as I am fumbling around this question. Gifting is a time honored tradition. In many situations it is expected to bring a gift when visiting someone’s home.

But

I struggle with capitalism.

Gift giving during the holidays is part of the buy buy mentality that is the American lack of culture.

We just churn out gifts for the sake of gifts because that was what we were nurtured into doing.

Full Circle

So I have concluded the best gift somebody can give you is their time.

However the best gift I ever received was 15 years ago when this showed up under our tree. Cooper was an amazing dog.
