Write about a few of your favorite family traditions.
Sauerkraut
I detested sauerkraut as a kid. I’m not one for family traditions. That’s one we stick to. Certainly not for superstitious reasons I believe the reason we do it is so we can talk to each other about eating sauerkraut.
Variations on aTheme
We all make our sauerkraut a little differently. I never claim mine to be the best. I simply like mine the best and mine is not as sour. I think I got kicked out of Pennsylvania for this.
Good Luck
Different parts of the country eat certain foods on New Year’s Day for good luck. Certainly there’s no merit to this, but we do it anyways. I now like sauerkraut so I have no issues with it, but we still hide it in something so we make pierogies on New Year’s Day.
Pierogis
Per tradition, I ask for the recipe every year. My sister-in-law emails it to me. Believe me, I know how to make pierogies, but I ask her for the recipe anyways.

We filled them with mushrooms, sauerkraut, and mashed potatoes. I have never made instant mashed potatoes in my life until this year.
So I had my sauerkraut on New Year’s Day and this year is a train wreck. Personally, it’s been great, but in the whole scheme of things we human being can do much better.
