What gives you direction in life?

Paul’s Deli -Williamsburg, Va

I remember one year right before Christmas a bunch of good friends were exchanging gifts before we headed back to spend holidays with our family.

My friend gave me a board game, we ordered a round of beers and broke out the game. Only when we opened up the game, we found there were no directions. Back then there was no Internet, where we could find the directions.

Next Best Thing

We did what we usually do, we sat down and penned a hyperbolic fun filled letter to the makers of the game. I remember the letter had a backdrop to how the Grinch stole Christmas.. It was fun and in good nature.

So we did the next best thing, we made up our own rules and they were random and without rhyme or reason. But that was the point as that was the fun. The makers of the game actually wrote us back with a jovial letter as well. We never did play the game using the directions. We often referred to that game as out of directions.

Misplaced Metaphor

So this might be the best misplaced metaphor for how I find direction in life. We are all winging it and life does not come with directions..
