Have you ever been camping?
Living in Oregon and Washington camping is the way of life. It certainly isn’t something that came naturally to me as I remember the first time I went camping with my dad.
New Smithville Pennsylvania
Hi Dad was a reformed alcoholic but this first camping trip was before the reformation. We drove about 45 minutes and parked near a familiar stream where he used to go fishing with us. Our entire equipment consisted of three sleeping bags, a pack of chips and a six pack of Schmidt’s beer..
My dad didn’t even prepare the camping body just threw the sleeping bags down on top of some footage and that’s where we slept. It wasn’t that cold, but it was damp.
In the middle of the night, my fishing rod flew into the water, and I grabbed it before losing it. There’s a giant fish in the end of the line.. I still feel bad for that fish.
I don’t think I slept all that much that night. I was not a nap taker, but I slept much of the following afternoon. My first encounter with camping was not a good one.
However, by now I’m pretty good at it.

Washington DC
I believe I was a freshman in college. My brother and I and a friend went to the No Nukes rally in Washington DC. We went out to a bar the night before. I remember it was the Tune Inn on Capitol Hill. We ended up sleeping on the Capitol steps.. The Police woke us up at Dawn and I didn’t even ask them to. I didn’t realize camping had wake up calls..
Somewhere along the line, I figured it out.
