    Relatively Speaking Jim

    Do you need time?

Einstein said that our perception of time as a river flowing from past to future is an “illusion,” a conclusion supported by his theory of relativity.

Certainly, I could exist just by measuring where the sun and moons sit in the sky.

I wake up in the morning, pretty much a function of how the light comes in the bedroom. It ends there as today is a cloudy day.

Is I amble with this answer, I’m a little humbled by how much we actually need time. The word need is misused as I should be saying we rely on time and structure. I really want to answer this question that time is an overused construct invented by man.

I hate to admit that some inventions are pretty darn good.

We aren’t here for a long time, but rather to have a good time.

    Jim Croce

    • Jim Croce wrote “Time in a Bottle” for his pregnant wife, Ingrid, in December 1970.
    • Croce’s son, A.J., said the song was “an epiphany” for his father, igniting his desire to pursue music professionally

If I could save time in a bottle
The first thing that I’d like to do
    Is to save every day
    ‘Til eternity passes away
Just to spend them with you

If I could make days last forever
If words could make wishes come true
I’d save every day like a treasure and then
Again, I would spend them with you

Jim Croce passed away soon after this song was composed.

  • Invent a holiday! Explain how and why everyone should celebrate.

Today, November 5, 2025, is National Stress Awareness Day, National Love Your Red Hair Day, and National Donut Day. Other observances include National Advent Calendar Day, National Chinese Takeout Day, and World Tsunami Awareness Day.

Enjoy all these holidays in conjunction, as I would suggest wearing a red wig, while doing yoga and eating a doughnut

  • Cars and Status

    Cars and Status

What’s something you believe everyone should know.

In the United States, especially in minority communities there’s a hierarchy based on your mode of transportation

Walking and running are for the fitness freaks and aren’t part of this hierarchy. These are, weirdos and outliers.

Walking for transportation is at the bottom of the pyramid.

Taking the bus is the next step up.

I don’t know where a bicycle fits in.

Then there are taxi, cabs, and Ubers.

Any car that runs is the top of the echelon. There are so many cars in urban Los Angeles, and a good proportion of those are on blocks.

But a car that runs that gets you status.

I don’t know what to say about this.

Citation -not a direct quote, but the general idea came from

  • When I was Younger

    When I was Younger

What will your life be like in three years?

I always have been younger and three years from now I will be older. It will be autumn. These things are guaranteed.

I will be driving a flying car and I will be able to teleport to Europe and most of the civilized world will stop eating meat.

There are no guarantees for three years from now.

But both of my daughters will be turning 33, and when people turn 33 I write them a poem. It’s titled funkier 33.

You have that to look forward to.

I still will not have mastered German.
