• Eyes of a Child

    Eyes of a Child

What’s a lesson you’ve learned recently that shifted your perspective?

Spending time with children will reset one’s perspective in a transformative way. Certainly, not for everybody. But for me it works.

I spent yesterday afternoon with the kids at a playground new to me, I watched our youngest climb high ladders to reach unscalable sliding boards. I watched kids of all races play carefree with not a hint of malice.

And there are some battles not worth fighting. Kids pretty much self regulate what they eat. As kids we sat at the table for hours not touching what our parents served. If a kids wants to only eat half a banana they will eat a half of a banana. You move on to the next battle.

    And read them a book.

  • I’ll Make This as Boring as Possible

What do you do to improve your sleep?

Historically, I had a hard time falling asleep. I can’t say exactly why. Either my mind races or there are issues to resolve, either internally of tactically.

In the last five years somehow sleep has come easy and I honestly can’t say why.

I guess this his axiom works. = “Be content with your life.” That is easier said than done and comes from a place of privilege.

    Forget that one as well.

I think there are two common factors.

    1. Get Old – there seems to be correlation
    2. Get Up Early – -there seems to be causation.
    3. Channel your inner animal.

We were out running errands, yesterday and we knew we wanted to watch the soccer match at 5 0clock. I get antsy when I don’t get my run in. The carpet store, led to a trip to the library and then Lowe’s.

It was now half past four and the game would be on soon. I told my wife my run , I am okay to miss some of the match as getting a run in is more important to me. Sorry US soccer, running is more important to me. That may explain why they got a red card.

I used to be an elite long distance runner but time has taken its toll. I am happy to run 5000 kilometers. I do it everyday and some times go longer.

I enjoy the solitude and the aftermath of the endorphin high. Running is what I have been doing since the spring of 1983. It is who I am.

A poignant quote from The Great Believers highlights the difference between naivety and optimism, arguing that true optimists are survivors who have faced adversity.
